The MicroPop Microbiome

During the vernissage of “MicroPop – Design, Science and the World of Microbes” at SPEICHER GRAMZOW, guests had the opportunity to take samples from surfaces to make invisible things from our everyday life visible.

Making the SPEICHER microbiome visible in order to establish a direct link to one’s own environment was the idea of Franziska Höhn (CMFI) and David Paccagnella, PhD students from Tübingen. The guests of the exhibition were handed so-called “Abklatschplatten” by them in the microbiological laboratory, which had been set up especially for the exhibition. These are small Petri dishes with a nutrient medium (agar) on which microorganisms find excellent growth conditions.

The idea was met with great interest and guests began taking prints throughout the storage building. The surfaces used ranged from the walls and floors of the warehouse to smartphones, shoes, and bags, as well as body parts such as cheeks, tongues, and palms. After the impression was made, the agar plates contained microorganisms that we allowed to grow in an incubator at warm, humid temperatures for five days. Together the impression plates give a picture of the microbiome of the SPEICHER GRAMZOW on 06.05.2023 (the numbers make an anonymous recognition of the own sample possible).
